online resource

Lower burial Iron spud by left shoulder. Or perhaps a woodworker's tool, use uncertain. Length 13.5cm. Socket at right angles to cutting edge, much damaged and details of construction obscured. Was it a closed socket, a split socket or a socket with edges folded together? Blade evenly expanded, edges damaged. Much wood remains in socket. Socket is probably opened, but X-ray should show.Parallels: cf. London in Roman Times, pl. XXXIV.5
