Iron sword with organic remains of scabbard

Sword: broken in 5 pieces (2 breaks shown in Brent engraving), at least one break recorded in original report - broken in grave? Length 90cm. Width of blade in sheath 5.5cm. Substantial traces of a wooden sheath with leather over it, and a sheepskin lining inside the sheath - both the skin and hairs are visible. Clear impressions of the upper and lower guards, width 1cm. The upper cross-piece was of wood, and traces of it survive on the lower edge of the pommel knob. This is an oval iron bar 5.5cm wide, 1cm thick, that evidently served as a pommel cap. The grip itself was of wood, vertically ribbed, and the lower cross-piece was also of wood.X-ray no. 6: A pattern welded blade, with two composite rods in standard pattern - the welding shows distinctly.X-ray could not be located in 2006-7. – D.H.
