Faussett's description of the shield construction is somewhat confusing because it seems to suggest the shield had a cylindrical (flanged?) and a flat grip, which seems technically unviable. The reconstruction shown with the shield boss No. 2,however, may be based on a misleading interpretation of Faussett's description. It seems possible that the 'cylinder' and the 'cross-pieces' Faussett described in relation to a number of shields from Guilton refer to a type of shield grip Dickinson & Härke 1992, 24 defined as a 'flanged, long grip'. – B.B.
