Damaged shield-boss, height 8.8cm, diam. c. 17.5cm (7 inches). Carinated boss with convex dome, stud broken off, slight ridge carination above sloping waist and flange. Flange width c. 2cm. Remains of two rivets, indicating 5 originally, with disc heads (diam. 2.3cm). Leather remains on underside. Very corroded and perhaps a bit sandy. Underside of dome plastered with yellowish plaster.SCH originally assigned the number Bo.U.5, to this object, but may she thought it might possibly be M 6237, Kingston grave 2, based on dimensions of various sketches in the MS Diary, T.D. Kendrik sketch (pre-war used in Liverpool Museum) and the the published illustrations in the Inventorium Sepulchrale. She also notes that the numbering of bosses on pl. XV of the Inventorium Sepulchrale is very inaccurate. The Gatty Slip for M 6237 is missing, but the Gatty Slip for M 6247 is a sheild boss from Kingston Down grave 2. The National Museums Liverpool database attribute M 6237 to Kingston Down grave 129, perhaps mirroring the confusion with plate XV. – D.H.
