Iron shield boss, described on Mayer card index as 5 inches tall. Mayer card attributes this to grave 81, but in doing so is clearly following the notoriously inaccurate grave-numbering of bosses on Inventorium Sepulchrale plate XV (index on page 229). According tot he MS Diary [Liverpool], volume VI, page 21 verso, the grave 81 boss, though conical was small, i.e. 3 1/2 inches in height, 4 6/8 inches in diam. This now lost boss is probably that figured on Inventorium Sepulchrale plate XV.13. That it is probably from grave 112 is attested by the Society of Antiquaries MS 723, folio 26, where measurements are given as height 5 3/8 inches, diam. 5 1/2 inches. Thus, it must have been similar in size as that from grave 177, as indeed the 2 tall bosses on plate XV, of which no. 15 is probably from grave 177, suggest.Vera Evison, Antiquaries Journal xliii (1963), p. 50 notes the discrepancy between recorded size of drawing in Inventorium Sepulchrale, but doesn't go far enough by not stating that the drawings are attributed to the wrong grave.
