Iron barrel lock with textile remains

MS 723, folio 35: Sibertswold boxes. No. 151 \Box. [image of lock-bolt] Iron hasp. [image of barrel lock]\""Iron padlock, barrel-form, length 2.8cm. Composed of a large cylinder diam. 1.5cm, surmounted by a small cylinder diam. 5mm. At one end both cylinders are closed by iron plates, though there is a tiny rectangular aperture at the base of the larger (for key?). At the other end the small cylinder is clean trilled and the large cylinder has a rectangular aperture for the insertion of a key. This end-plate presumably once separable from the barrel to allow the padlock attachment, in the form of sliding rods, to be inserted and removed. No key surviving. Object really needs X-ray to show interior. Textile impressions on side not drawn.Cf. Siberswold grave 24 et. al.Textile analysed by Coatsworth & Fitzgerald 2001 as \A fragment of replaced fairly coarse textile preserved all over a long tubular copper alloy object which seems to have wrapped the object...\" They state \"copper-alloy\" though this object is of iron; confusion perhaps with M 6449 from grave 24 a similar object in copper-alloy which is compared with M 6512. – D.H."
