Gold pendant with inset garnets and filigree cross, length with loop 3.3cm. It consists of a thin gold disc with thick beaded wire from and simple cross, the wire sweated on. At the centre is a prominent setting consisting of a four pointed start with the slightly convexly curved points set with sliced garnets on chequered gold foil, and a central cabochon garnet set in a domed shell boss inside a circular collar. Within each cross arm, at the centre is a small cabochon garnet in a simple collar with beaded frame. These garnets are a deeper red than those of the central ornament. The cross arms are flanked by filigree wires - next to the large wire a smaller beaded wire - and inside this again two pairs of spirally twisted fine wires (each wire consisting of two wires twisted together) arranged to a simulated plait pattern. The outer rim is likewise bordered with fine beaded wire and three pairs of spirally twisted wires. The loop is worn and partially damaged at sides by friction of thread, but whether this partial biting through loop is ancient due to use of pendant by ladies of Faussett family is hard to say. It looks as it might have been worn on a gold chain. Rim also worn. The gold is yellow but perhaps rather alloyed with silver. The pendant is beautifully made and very solid.Lab results: AuAgCuBack63352Wire rim67303Loop68293
