Gold pendant, length with loop 1.55cm. A small oval classical gem in 'debased style dating from the third or fourth century AD.' It depicts a seated figure probably Dea Roma with helmet, spear and shield. The stone is one of the sard variety. It is translucent deep orange in colour, and is chipped, apparently before it was set. It is enclosed in a plain sheet gold collar and backplate, and has frame of beaded gold wires, fine inside thicker. The corrugated loop, plain inside, has been soldered at front below wires (they may even have been added after loop in place) and to back where it is cut off in V shape. Definitely an Anglo-Saxon setting. Very little sign of wear, but wire rubbed at bottom and close to loop.Lab results: GoldSilverCopperBack75223Beading76222Loop75223
