Inscription

Source

The marble plate 62 x 33 cm from the exedra of the cemetery basilica in Dougga was reconstructed from 26 fragments. The letters are 4 to 4,5 cm high. The church was built in the beginning of the 5th century at latest, and the paleography also suggests the early date for the inscription. Currently in the museum of Tunis.

Discussion

The inscription commemorates the dedication of a porticus probably connected to the basilica, however, the archeological excavations have not managed to find it. According to Duval, this church in Dougga was built (with much effort applied) above the crypt. This suggests that some local martyrs whose names were well known were venereted in place.
