Copper-alloy and iron barrel lock

online resource
posted on 2021-10-26, 19:40 authored by Helena HamerowHelena Hamerow
Bronze barrel padlock, length of cylinder 2.6cm. Made of thick sheet metal folded and clipped into a large cylinder surmounted by a smaller (one piece of metal only used for both). At one end the end plate still survives, detached with sliding iron lock mechanism rusted into place: outside a circular rod; inside a rectangular iron bar which will have had iron springs; remains of a circular iron rod in the upper cylinder at this end. The other end has a closed upper cylinder, and the bronze end plate to the main cylinder is missing. At this end one can see the end of the iron bar catch. The key would have been inserted in this end, to engage with the iron bar after passing through the now missing end-plate by an aperture.
